Death and The Lovers Tarot Combination: Meaning in Love, Work and Growth

By Julie Zhu · Published · 5 min read

The skeleton rider and the blessed couple. A reading about how love changes form.

Short answer: Death and the Lovers together describe transformation in a relationship or a values-based choice. Death ends an old form; the Lovers chooses what comes next. The pair can mean a relationship ending, but it can just as easily mean a couple moving into a deeper, truer stage together.

What does Death bring to The Lovers?

Death is number thirteen, which reduces to four and links it with The Emperor: one builds structures and the other clears them away so new ones can grow. In many early decks the card was left unnamed, a superstitious silence. Waite and Smith gave it a name and a knight on a white horse, drawing on medieval images of the dance of death in which every rank of society meets the same fate. More on the Death page.

What does The Lovers add to Death?

The Lovers is number six, the number of harmony and union in many traditions. In early Italian and Marseille decks, the card showed a young man standing between two women, often read as a choice between virtue and vice, with Cupid aiming an arrow from above. Waite and Smith changed the scene to Adam and Eve in the Garden under the archangel Raphael, which moved the meaning from a choice between partners to the deeper union of two people and the values they share. How do Death and The Lovers work together?

Death is not literal here. It is the end of a version of something. Beside the Lovers, that version is often the way you love, the way you choose, or the role you play in a partnership. The pair can describe the end of a honeymoon phase and the start of real intimacy, or a conscious decision to leave a connection that no longer aligns.

In Golden Dawn terms, Death is Water and Scorpio, while The Lovers is Air and Gemini.

Death and The Lovers in love

In love, the pair is about transformation: a breakup, a recommitment, a move, an engagement or a deep change in how two people relate.

Death and The Lovers at work

At work, it can describe a major choice that closes one path and opens another, especially one tied to personal values.

What if Death or The Lovers is reversed?

A reversed Death suggests resisting change; a reversed Lovers suggests confusion about values. Together they ask what you truly want before choosing.

Does it matter whether Death or The Lovers comes first?

Death first is an ending that leads to a new love or choice. Lovers first is a choice that ends an old chapter.

How might someone feel when Death and The Lovers appear?

Death: Think of closure. The Lovers: Usually The Lovers highlights a meaningful connection or clarity on what you want.

Death in the past, The Lovers in the future

Reversed, this card shows resisting a necessary ending, holding on to a role, place or relationship that has already finished in every way but name. The reversal points to inner conflict about values, or difficulty loving yourself. Choices feel hard because you are not sure what you want.

Example: Death and The Lovers in a real question

Sara and her partner drew the pair before their wedding. They read it as the end of their single selves and spent an evening writing what they wanted to keep from that time.
