The Moon
By Julie Zhu · 3 min read · Updated 2026-11-06
A dog and a wolf howl at the moon while a crayfish crawls out of the water and a path winds between two towers. The Moon is the card of uncertainty, dreams and things that are not quite what they seem. When it appears, we read slowly, and here is how we suggest you do too.
The Moon tarot card means intuition, uncertainty and illusion: a path walked by moonlight, where fears and dreams look larger than they are. Upright it calls for listening to your inner voice while questioning appearances. Reversed, think of confusion lifting, fears released or truths emerging.

What does The Moon card look like?
A full moon shines between two towers. A dog and a wolf howl at it while a crayfish crawls out of a pool onto a winding path. A moon shines between two towers. A dog and a wolf howl, and a crayfish crawls from a pool. A path winds into the distance.
A full moon with a crescent inside it fills the sky, its face turned down and eyes closed as if dreaming. Drops of light, sometimes read as the Hebrew letter Yod, fall toward the earth. Below, a dog and a wolf howl at the sky, one tame and one wild, two sides of the same instinct. Between them, a crayfish crawls out of a pool, a picture of deep feelings and half-formed fears rising from the unconscious. A narrow path runs from the water between two stone towers and on toward distant hills. The towers recall the pillars of the High Priestess and the towers in Death, gateways the traveler must pass through without full sight. Everything here is half-lit: the scene is beautiful and a little eerie, and its meaning depends on whether you walk the path or freeze on the bank.
What number is The Moon and where does it sit in the Fool's Journey?
The Moon is number eighteen, which reduces to nine and links it with The Hermit: both cards walk in low light, one carrying a lantern and the other guided only by moonlight. Older decks often showed the moon above two dogs and a crayfish, an image that Waite kept almost intact. He wrote that the card speaks of the life of the imagination apart from the life of the spirit, a reminder that what we sense at night is not always what is there by day.
